Or MOS?<\/p>\n<div id=\"unruly-publisher-marker__inArticle\"><\/div>\n<p>These acronyms and slang terms are increasingly being used by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kidspot.com.au\/parenting\/real-life\/in-the-news\/teen-takes-her-own-life-in-front-of-family-after-relentless-cyber-bullying\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">teens and young children<\/a> in text message and chat windows and some of them are potentially very dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>The staff at\u00a0<em>Kidspot<\/em> like to think of themselves as a pretty savvy bunch of parents, but these slang terms stumped even us.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a problem.<\/p>\n<p>Good parents are cyber-savvy parents<\/p>\n<p>An increasing number of children getting access to phones, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kidspot.com.au\/parenting\/teenager\/cybersafety\/parents-are-hiring-cyber-spies-to-keep-track-of-their-kids-online\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">smartphones and devices<\/a>, and at an earlier and earlier age.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kidspot.com.au\/parenting\/child\/child-development\/buying-an-iphone-for-your-five-year-old-at-christmas-youre-not-alone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Research <\/a>conducted by Telstra and released prior to Christmas showed that 31 per cent of parents planned to give their child a smartphone for Christmas, and that included some children as young as five years old.<\/p>\n<p>All that adds up to the need for parents to stay on top of online advances, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kidspot.com.au\/parenting\/teenager\/cybersafety\/cyber-safety-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-new-kids-app-yellow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">apps<\/a>, social media and cyber trends.<\/p>\n<p>To help, US Internet safety company Bark, as reported by <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.popsugar.com\/moms\/Text-Slang-Parents-Should-Know-42972543\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Popsugar<\/a><\/em>, shared some key terms parents need to know.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7029\" src=\"https:\/\/boptillyoudrop.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/01\/Cyber-slang-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>KMS\/KYS<\/strong> &#8211; Kill myself\/kill yourself<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dabbing<\/strong> &#8211; refers to concentrated doses\u00a0of marijuana<\/p>\n<p><strong>Snatched<\/strong> &#8211; means \u2018on point\u2019 or well styled<\/p>\n<p><strong>MOS<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Mum over shoulder<\/p>\n<p><strong>CD9\/9\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; Parents are nearby<\/p>\n<p><strong>WTTP<\/strong> &#8211; Want to trade pics<\/p>\n<h3>Cyber-safety tips for parents<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> Decide when the time is right for kids to get a device: There is no \u2018right\u2019 age \u2014 purpose, need and responsibility are a better guide.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> Establish a written usage agreement: Telstra\u2019s \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telstra.com.au\/content\/dam\/tcom\/personal\/consumer-advice\/pdf\/consumer\/cyber-safety-my-first-mobile-agreement.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">My First Mobile Agreement<\/a>\u2019 outlines some basic ground rules for your kids to follow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> Make the most of parental controls: Parental controls tools allow you to set time-of-day restrictions on children\u2019s device usage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> Protect your bank account: Give your kids information to understand and track their phone and data usage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong> Protect the phone: Get a hard case, preferably personalised, and a screen protector.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6.<\/strong> Balance active, passive and no screen time: Support and encourage your kids in activities that don\u2019t involve a digital device.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7.<\/strong> Check your child\u2019s phone with them: Sit down with your child and take a look at recent messages, photos and internet history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8.<\/strong> Establish a household technology culture: Make sure you\u2019re a positive example.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9.<\/strong> Be an offline supporter: Support and encourage your kids in activities that don\u2019t involve a device.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10.<\/strong> Turn off devices before bedtime: Lack of sleep can affect alertness, concentration and memory.<\/p>\n<p>This article was written by\u00a0Alys Gagnon<\/p>\n<p>Found on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kidspot.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kidspot<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Know what KMS means?
