However, it follows from previous research that found\u00a0positive effects of a child being\u00a0old for their grade\u00a0was the same for students who began school late or for those who repeated a grade.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ad-block-2963107983-4\" class=\"ad-block ad-mobile-article-after-3rd-p\" data-ad-tar=\"pos=4\"><\/div>\n<p>Researcher Professor Herbert Marsh, from the ACU&#8217;s\u00a0Institute of Positive Psychology and Education, said, &#8220;Being older in your class has advantages for your academic self-confidence.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Self-beliefs are a driving force in young people\u2019s academic decision-making processes.\u00a0Numerous studies show that such self-beliefs predict educational aspirations,&#8221; he explained.<\/p>\n<p>Older children are able to compare themselves more favourably to their younger peers, giving them greater self-confidence and therefore more chance of academic success.<\/p>\n<p>In the paper, the researchers noted that when students are held back, or repeat a year parents and policy-makers often discuss the short-term effect on a child, be it shame or dismay.
